Canadians can get the record via Secret City, while Europeans need look no further than One Little Indian on October 6.The ten-track set was recorded in the band’s native Montreal with Justin “Bon Iver” Vernon (dude gets around!), and Saddle Creek plans to issue a digital single for the title track on August 26.In other news from this lot, Liz Powell appears on the new LP from Broken Social Scene’s Brendan Canning, and Land of Talk have a pair of dates coming up pretty quick.read more

This one “was written by an obscure proto-punk collective called ‘Bob Dylan,’” Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson tells Daytrotter, adding that he does it the Byrds’ way. If you’ve heard Sweetheart of the Rodeo, you know that means a loose, free-wheeling, country-rock take on Dylan’s carefree Basement Tapes classic (and if you haven’t, why are you still reading this shit instead of typing that title into your preferred music-getting source?). Like another promising young act, New Jersey’s Titus Andronicus, this Brooklyn singer-songwriter probably won’t be able to escape endless Bright Eyes comparisons until he eclipses Conor Oberst’s fame (sorry, David Dondero) or starts to sings in a less shaky voice. Here, though, along with honky-tonk piano and barely-in-tune acoustic guitar, Robinson’s quavering vocals add to the song’s ramshackle feel, doing credit to its songwriter even if failing to surpass the more definitive past versions.

Sing-alongs in the sunshine, yeah, that’s why the Hold Steady works so well at a festival. Craig Finn dedicates the Stay Positive title track to an audience member’s deceased friend and then gets down to business. His shirt gives some idea of the relative humidity on this afternoon.

Speaking of shirts, Dinosaur Jr.’s drummer Murph isn’t wearing one, but that’s OK. “Freak Scene” is the anthem, and yeah, the damn hands were up.

Nic Offer attributes !!!’s frequently great live sets to his willingness to “fucking give”. Watch “Must Be the Moon” and you be the judge.

It’s been noted that Times New Viking live are much less noisy, allowing their garage-pop melodies to escape all that fuzz. Check how scrubbed-up and clean they sound on “Teen Drama”.

When it comes to garage-y pop, Apples in Stereo have been doing it for years. “Energy” shows that studio rat Robert Schneider makes for pretty compelling rock frontman.

Lackthereof “Doomed Elephants” - Given that Danny Seim’s drumming in Menomena tends to be rather busy, flashy, and foregrounded, one might reasonably expect that his one-man-band project Lackthereof would be more or the same, or even more drum-tastic. Well, not quite: His drumming style is still immediately recognizable, but the bombast has been dialed down significantly. He focuses on keeping the songs in a tight pocket, and leaving a great deal of negative space for fluid, rumbling bass lines that roll along with a mesmerizing grace. “Doomed Elephants” is especially gorgeous in the way its trebly elements just sort of hover loosely around the groove, implying an extreme depth of field that complements Seim’s lyrics about highways, oceans, and wide-open skies. As his words contemplate the enormity of those things, and confront the relative insignificance and fragility of his life, the music conveys equal measures of dread and awe. (Click here to buy it from Barsuk.)Elsewhere: I made a tumblr for the Fluxcast, complete with playlists for each podcast. You’re probably better off not reading those before listening, though.

Real stories of classic southern hip hop: Toni Hickman (aka Slim Goodie) and her rhyming partner drove to NYC from New Orleans in the mid ‘90s looking for a deal. Toni lived homeless for three months, taking every meeting she could, but eventually returned to New Orleans empty handed. Still, word of her skills got to Tony Draper of Suave House Records and after an over-the-phone audition he brought her to Houston where she killed tracks on classic albums by 8ball and MJG, Tela and Crime Boss. Toni has continued to work her magic through mix tapes and has her first solo album “Crippled Pretty” coming out this year (a reference, in part, to a near-fatal health scare that she faced recently). Leading up to the album, Mizz Hickman has honored us with some exclusive tracks, starting with the Marshall Law-produced club banger “Get Stupid”. Let it bump.
Also, check out vintage Hickman on the 8ball and MJG classic track “Armed Robbery”
There’s something super cheesy about it but for some reason that’s also their charm. Which other band would dare have dancing hot dogs in their video? Its kind of a mess but at least it’s fun and catchy, wouldn’t you agree? NB: The Mystery Jets pretty much took this sound wholesale for their last single "Two Doors Down"…

While you were waiting in line for an iPhone, the exciting world of non-Apple PMPs got rocked today. Say hello to the Journey-themed ZVUE MP3 player, for the Journey fan that needs more than Arnel to be satisfied. 11 new songs, 11 re-recorded classics, 1GB for the rest of your Journey MP3s. In sadder news, say goodbye to Zune tattoo guy. He says (via Wired):

I am done. I have had the Zune since day 1 and have noticed little improvement … Thanks for all the harsh comments and you will see very little of me anymore … the logo is leaving. Good news is I will still buy Zunes, but I might try out some of the competition before the Zune 3 comes out … I do dig all the people who supported my journey (–) all 4 of you.

His Journey, eh? Sounds like the ZVUE player might have found its first customer. Let’s hope they have a good logo.

Leslie Feist seems so innocent. But just look at that face. Don’t be fooled by the sweet and gentle voice behind the only album you and your partner can agree on during bedroom time. She is a diabolical marketing genius, with a targeted demographic assault that has systematically dominated every niche in the market. (Play along with me here.) Last week we saw her lock up the kid vote, and this morning she ceded the under 20 demo to Miley Cyrus (who performed on Today), and taught the housewives of America how to rock out in Bryant Park for Good Morning America. It’s nice that she didn’t perform “1234,” even though GMA anchor Robin Roberts drops hints by mentioning it’s on repeat in her brain at all times, and thank god for that; I think we can all agree that after an indie rock choir and an Elmo harmony, that song has gone as far as it needs to. This morning she brought the still worthy “I Feel It All” and her take on “Sea Lion Woman” to national television. The Reminder: Some songs might be played, but she’s still great.

Finding a good frame for a screengrab for this one was fun (not fun).

If you’ve seen two Fiery Furnaces concerts, odds are one left you totally blown away, and the other left you totally confused. The Friedbergers do not play the same show twice — not in song choice, and definitely not in song arrangement, each show bringing de novo interpretations of tunes’ structure, time signature, composition, etc. Often the only thread’s the lyrics. So where most live albums are basically documents of a band’s stage banter on a given tour, a Fiery Furnaces live record stands to be an aggressive, progressive Fiery Furnaces covers record — performed by the Fiery Furnaces. So, pretty cool that they’re releasing one.

Music festivals are really conducive for lots of things. Actually seeing music is often not one of them. That’s particularly an occupational hazard of festival reporting, though; photo pits are hot messes of sweat and elbows, and 15 minutes from a band’s first song, you need to be on the other side of the park lining up for the next must-see. So when you’re bouncing around from stage to stage, it’s a pretty special thing to have a band pierce that armor of distraction and just genuinely move you. That’s how it went down for Fleet Foxes’ set at Pitchfork Music Festival this past weekend. I already knew they were a great live band — it was a show at Bowery that turned me into a gushball in the first place — but that’s all the more reason to have been amazed at being amazed all over again. Pitchfork’s sharing video highlights from the festival.
